Chapter Eight

Nothing can ever compare to the pleasure Theo’s mouth produces. Gwen’s body quakes and shivers with the aftershock of the beautiful moment when she crashed into a million pieces. In his arms, she slowly regains her wits. “I had no idea.”

“The real miracle is that you can do that again if you wish.” His smile lights his eyes, but not as if he’s prideful. He looks smitten, but that cannot be.

“Can I?” Excitement builds in her chest and sensations stir again between her legs and low in her belly. Glancing at his shaft, her cheeks heat. “And can I give you pleasure as well?”

He caresses her cheek and pushes her hair from her face. “Not this night, sweetheart. Tonight is about you.”

Having left herself so vulnerable had been a mistake. Of course, he doesn’t want to leave himself in the same position. Her chest tightens painfully. “I should go.” She sits up, then jumps from the bed, grabbing her nightgown from the floor. “This was…” Part of her wants to say it was a mistake, but she can’t bring herself to utter those words. She drags the cotton over her head and ties the bow at her throat.

Theo gapes at her. “You’re leaving?”

“I must. If I were caught here, it would be terrible for both of us. Lady Chervil would insist you marry me.” A nervous laugh bubbles up while she forces her tears down.

Moving to the edge of the mattress, he puts on his shirt, which covers him to the middle of his thick muscular thighs. “I wish you wouldn’t look so aghast, Gwendolyn. What we shared was, in my mind, quite beautiful. Whatever you think it means, you should talk to me about.”

Tears are fighting to get out. She backs toward the door. “It doesn’t mean anything. You found a woman alone in the library. I behaved like a wanton. These things happen all the time and no one needs to know about it.” Her voice cracks on the last few words.

Standing, he steps toward her. “Don’t leave.”

Gwen opens the door. “Good night. I’ll be leaving Crestworth after the ball. Don’t trouble yourself about me, Your Grace. I have a solid plan for my future.” She rushes out the door. Blinding tears fill her eyes as she finds her way to her own room where she bolts the door and throws herself into the bed.

What a fool she’d been to think he had feelings for her. No. She never really believed that. He wants to keep her around due to some sense of duty. She’s a grown woman and can take care of herself. Tonight was a strange set of circumstances that will never happen again.

She cries harder into her pillow.
